From the recording Footprints of Time

This song was originally recorded by Phil on his first solo recording, then re-recorded when he was with the great bluegrass band, The Seldom Scene, on the recording they did with Jonathan Edwards. Bob arranged this song using elements from both versions along with his own spin.

Lyrics

There's an icy night wind blowin
As I walk this road I've known
Past the frozen trail that's going
Back to where I don't belong.

With my hands deep in my pockets,
And my eyes down to the ground,
I can speak the name I'm thinking,
While there's no one else around.

(break 1 mandolin)

There's a fire hot and smoking
Someone's head is on my arm
And once more I find I'm thinking
Of a winter dead and gone.

Well I should leave from here tomorrow.
I've been dreaming for too long.
Walkin down the street at midnight,
Back to where I don't belong.

(break 2 - bass) key change (break 3 - banjo)

There's an icy night wind blowin
As I walk this road I've known
Past the frozen trail that's going
Back to where I don't belong.
